Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse versus OneLake
OneDrive for Applications = OneLake for Data.
OneLake is a single place for all your analytics data. Every tenant has exactly one OneLake. Fabric stores Lakehouses, Warehouses, and other items in OneLake.
Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse is a platform designed to store, manage, and analyze structured and unstructured data in a single location.
To create a Lakehouse with OneLake , you first need to enable Microsoft Fabric in your Tenant, and the Fabric trial license if you don’t have Fabric Capacity.
Step 1. To enable Fabric : Go to settings, at the top right of Power BI Service -> Select Admin portal under Governance and insights -> Select Tenant settings -> Click Enabled.
Step 2. To enable Fabric Trial License, if you do not have a Fabric Capacity license:
Click on your Profile at the top right of Power BI service ->Select Start trial ->Select Start trial again on the next screen.
Note: You need to have a Power BI License (Free or Pro) to enable the Fabric Trial. You should also wait for 15 minutes or more for the Tenant settings changes to take effect. After the changes, you will see the Fabric home page with options to navigate between services like Power BI, Data Engineering etc.
To check the Trial license: Select on Capacity settings ->Select Trial, you will see the Capacity unit, region and status.
Step 3. Using Power BI option on the menu at the bottom left, Create a Workspace for the Lakehouse.
Step 4. Navigate to Data Engineering on the menu at the bottom left to create a Lakehouse -> Select Lakehouse -> Add a name for the new Lakehouse -> Select create.
🙂 Happy data analytics.
