A quick post today. I got this question from someone who needed to access Azure AD Content Pack in Power BI Service but received “Needs Admin Approval” error message.

The Power BI content pack for Azure AD gives you insight about all the activities within your environment. To access the content pack, you need an Azure AD premium license. Users in the Global Admin, Security Admin, Security Reader or Report Reader roles have access to the data at Tenant level.

If you received “Needs Admin Approval” error message when trying to access the Content Pack in Power BI Service, a Global Admin needs to grant global permission using following steps:

From Power BI Service, Install the Content pack

1. Select “Get Data”
2. Services
3. Search for “Azure Active Directory Activity Logs” under Apps
4. Select “Get it now”
5. Enter Number of days and Tenant ID

From Azure Portal, request your Global admin to grant permission

1. Select “Azure Active Directory”
2. Select “Enterprise Applications”
3. Select “Azure AD Power BI Content Pack App”
4.   Under Security, select “Permissions”
5. Select “User Consent”
6. Select “Grant Admin consent for <tenant name>”

The Global Admin will be prompted to verify the login and give consent by clicking Accept.

After providing consent, non-admin users will now access the Content Pack in Power BI Service.
